Youth League Basketball, 12U Recap

Youth League Basketball, 12U Recap

youth league basketball

Our youth league basketball season ended this weekend in a heart-breaking 35-36 loss in the county championship game.  These girls fought to the very last second and played with more heart and passion than you’ll find in some college games.youth league basketball

In some ways, this season was the end of an era.  These girls have played youth league basketball together for years now.  The majority of their team will move up to play middle school ball next year, so this was their last year playing youth league together. (Sniff, sniff.)

Our girls finished out the season with a 14-1 record.  Kyndall made a grand total of 16 points and somewhere around 4,768 steals.  (Defense is her strong point.  One day, she’ll be able to muscle that ball up to the goal easier and up her offense game.  She is just too little.)

And for your viewing pleasure, I have included a shaky, iPhone video of the girls in action.  Kyndall is #11, and you’ll see her steal the ball and then miss her shot.  It wasn’t often she missed her shots–she usually like passing more than shooting!

Farmhouse Entry Door Shopping + Choosing Ours

Disclaimer:  If you are an email subscriber and you received this post twice, I apologize.  Due to a WordPress error (or most likely, a WordPress user error), this post was sent out in email but never posted.  Oops!

One of the first things we needed to pick out for our forever home was the entry door. I love the look of double doors and I knew I wanted lots of glass. (We are way off the road, so I don’t have to worry so much with Peeping Tom’s. Plus, I’m pretty sure I’ll know you are there before you make it to my door because of Max.)

The first thing I did, of course, was a Pinterest search for farmhouse entry doors. Because how you choose things for your house without a Pinterest search, I’ll never know.

Entry Door

One thing I learned in my search for farmhouse entry doors is that none of the online sellers list actual prices for the doors.  It was so frustrating to fill out a contact from and request a price, only to find out that a particular door was WAY over our budget.
Entry Door

I prefer simple, squared doors rather than the ornate rounded ones.  The doors with arched tops are gorgeous, they just aren’t us.

Entry Door

After gathering lots of Pinterest farmhouse entry door inspiration, I went to our local building supply store.  I priced similar doors from them and compared those prices to the ones from Lowe’s and Home Depot.  Our building supply store won by a land-slide, and I ordered our front doors from them.

I chose wood-look fiberglass material for our entry door.  We have painted them once, but they still need a second coat.(full tutorial on that coming soon!).

Even without the final coat of paint, and with the red mud all over the concrete (how about those dog prints??), I already love our farmhouse entry doors!

If you are in the North Alabama area, we ordered these from Littrell Lumber Mill and were very pleased with the product and the price.  This is not a sponsored post by them–I just wanted to give them a shout-out!

A better title for this post may have been What I Abandoned: January 2017 instead of What I Read: January 2017. I had trouble starting this year strong with books that I love. And if I’ve learned anything from turning 32, it’s that I don’t have time to read books I don’t love.

What I Read:

The Liar by Nora Roberts.  I have always loved the stories that Nora Roberts weaves, and this one was no exception.  I predicted the ending early on, but the middle still kept me intrigued with its details and romance.  The Stars:  4/5

The Woman In Cabin 10 by Ruth Ware.  Interestingly written.  Ware switched viewpoints throughout and kept me guessing.  Until the very end, I wasn’t sure how things would turn out.  This book isn’t quite on the same level as Gone Girl and The Girl on The Train, but it’s close.  The Stars:  4.5/5

Sting by Sandra Brown.  If I had to choose a favorite author, Sandra Brown would make the top five list. As always, her newest release doesn’t disappoint.  Sting is filled with unexpected twists and turns and enough romance to get scorched by.  Everything I’ve come to expect in a Brown novel and more.
The Stars:  4.5/5

What She Knew by Gilly Macmillan.  I am not quite finished with this one but felt the need to include it anyways! I downloaded this book by mistake and then haven’t been able to put it down.  It is a tough read because of how closely I  identify with the mother’s fear in the story, but I am completely spellbound.  I can’t wait to see how everything turns out!  The Stars:  4/5

What I Abandoned:

Truly, Madly, Guilty by Liane Moriarty.

Unspoken by Dee Henderson.

The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Society by Mary Ann Shaffer and Annie Barrows.

I selected the first two books on this list because I have read previous books by the same authors that I adored.  The last book on the list was a recommendation by several friends.  You guys, I just couldn’t get into them.  I wouldn’t deem them bad books, necessarily.  Maybe I just picked them up at the wrong time.  I would love to know if you have read them and your what opinion is.

Now, what should I read next?

Bible Verses for A New Home: Write It On The Walls

Bible Verses For A New Home

Bible Verses For A New HomeI cannot put into words how blessed I felt when my parents and sister hosted a Scripture Writing party for our new home. Family and friends took time out of their busy schedules to come shower our new home with bible verses and prayer. It was the greatest feeling. I walked around my house for days after the party just crying, and I am not a crier.

I wanted to share some of those verses with you, in case you are building a new home and need ideas. Or even if you aren’t building a new home and want to put them in vinyl or paint them on your walls.

Bible Verses for A New Home

  • Choose this day whom you will serve, but as for me and my house we will serve the Lord.  Joshua 24:15
  • Learn to do good, seek justice, correct oppression, bring justice to the fatherless, plead the widows cause. Isaiah 1:17
  • Do not forget to show hospitality to strangers, for by doing so, some people have shown hospitality to angels without knowing it! Hebrews 13:2

Bible Verses for a new home

  • Now therefore, let it please you to bless the house of your servant, that it may continue to before you forever.  For you, O Lord God, have spoken it, and with your blessing let the house of your servant be blessed forever.  2 Samuel 7:29
  • God is our refuge and our strength.  Psalms 46:1

Bible Verses for a new home

  • Peace be to you, and peace be to your house, and peace be to all that you have. 1 Samuel 25:6
  • And now these three remain:  faith, hope, and love.  But the greatest of these is love. 1 Corinthians 13:13
  • Taste and see that the Lord is good.  Psalms 34:8
  • For I am the Lord your God who takes hold of your right hand and says to you “Do not fear, I will help you.”  Isaiah 41:13
  • Children are a gift from the Lord;  they are like arrows in a warriors hands.  Psalm 127:3-5

Bible Verses for New Home

  • So do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will care for itself.  Matthew 6:34
  • As iron sharpens iron, so a friend sharpens a friend.  Proverbs 27:17
  • For God so loved the world that He gave His only Son, so that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life.  John 3:16
  • For where two or three are gathered in my name, there I am among them.  Matthew 18:20
  • Everyone who hears these words of mine and does them will be like the a wise man who built his house on the rock.  Matthew 7:24Bible Verses for New Home

And a few photo collages, for my memory’s sake 🙂

32 Lessons I’ve Learned in 32 Years

32 lessons

Tomorrow, I am turning 32.  I’ve got more wrinkles, more vision loss, and {hopefully} more wisdom.  I like to sit down before birthdays and reflect on what I have learned.  As an ode to turning 32, I’m sharing with you 32 lessons I’ve learned in my 32 years of living.

32 Lessons I’ve Learned in 32 years

  1. A crazy schedule is not a badge of honor.  I’m realizing the importance of slow.
  2. The glass is always half full.  You just have to see it that way.
  3. Wherever you are, be all there.
  4. Be selective about your tribe.  True, real friends matter.  Not your social media followers.
  5. Realizing a dream feels just as good as you imagine it would.  For as long as I can remember, I have dreamed of having a white farmhouse.  That dream is coming true, little by little, and it makes my heart so happy.
  6. When you have three kids, they ARE your monkeys and that IS your circus.
  7. Patience is a virtue, but it’s not one I possess.
  8. Drink more water.  It helps, well, everything.
  9. “God doesn’t call the perfect, He calls the willing.  He doesn’t call the one who has it all, He calls the one who surrenders it all.” -Samuel Rodriguez
  10. Never send a text message without an emoji.  It’s hard to convey tone with just words in a text message–always include that smiley emoji!!
  11. Be intentional about family time.  Make it a priority.
  12. Put yourself out there.  You’ll never get the job/promotion/date/award/whatever if you don’t go for it.
  13. Never leave the house without lipstick and mascara.
  14. Caffeine may be a drug, but it’s a miracle drug.
  15. Be confident in yourself but not cocky.
  16. Dogs make life better.
  17. Know your strengths and weaknesses.  It’s ok to not be good at everything.
  18. Change makes life more interesting.
  19. Sunglasses can double as a hair accessory.
  20. Taking a few minutes every morning to pray/read your Bible/worship will get your brain and heart right for the whole day.
  21. God gives some of us (me!) a heart for music but not a talent for music.  Sing anyways.
  22. Spontaneous road trips are the bomb-dot-com.
  23. Big earrings are best.
  24. Read a book.  It’s good for the brain and good for the soul. (Suggestion:  Nothing to Prove by Jennie Allen.)
  25. Laugh.  A lot.
  26. Never air your dirty laundry on Facebook.
  27. Show up on time.
  28. Make time to take care of yourself.  Eating right, exercising, massages, skin care.
  29. Schedule downtime.  Life is crazy and chaotic and if you aren’t careful, it will run right away with you.  Plan time to do absolutely nothing once a week.
  30. Keep a running list of things that make you happy.
  31. Do something good for somebody else every single day.
  32. Own your own style.  Just because something is “in-style” doesn’t mean you have to like it.

Floor & Decor Store Tour

floor and decor store tour

This post is sponsored by Floor & Decor.  As always, all opinions are my own.

floor and decor store tourWe are nearing the point in our house-building process where we are installing things–flooring, wall tile, cabinets.  After finding tons to love on the Floor & Decor website, I reached out to them about a blog partnership and they agreed!!  They invited me up for a full Floor & Decor store tour and I was, quite literally, floored (pun intended!).  We found every single thing we needed….. and more.

Floor & Decor has over 60 stores across the United States.  They carry hundreds of different flooring options–ceramic, porcelain, travertine, marble, hardwood, bamboo, and laminate.  They also carry a wide variety of back-splash materials, sinks, tools, and counter-tops.  All your flooring and decor’ing needs (<–I’m on a roll today, y’all!).

The Tour.

When Justin and I arrived for our Floor & Decor store tour, we were greeted by the store manager and the design team specialist.  Floor & Decor has in-store designers who will work with you on any project, for free.  Our designer, Theresa, was a huge help when it came to picking out tile and designing our master bath, which is the project we are partnering on.

If you are anything like me and struggle with visualizing things, Floor & Decor is the store for you.  Throughout the store, there are displays of miniature rooms to help you see what different flooring/tiles/grouts look like together.

Theresa sat down with us and went over our measurements and vision.  She walked around the store with us and pulled items that she felt matched the vision I had.  We spent the morning making different arrangements of floor tile and wall tile and pencils and decorative pieces.  It was so much fun and I was able to see the project even better.

Theresa pulled out these tiny pieces of grout samples so that I could select our grout color easier.  Being able to see the actual grout with our tile choice made me so much more confident in my decision!

As we were walking out, I spotted this clearance tile and fell in love!  I knew it would look just fantastic in our laundry room in a herringbone pattern.  And do you see that price tag?  That’s 88 cents per square foot… not bad Floor & Decor, not bad.

I can’t wait to share our master bathroom project with you, but in the meantime, if you have any of your own projects going on, I suggest a visit to Floor & Decor.

A Second Birthday Celebration for Jase

second birthday

second birthdayLast Saturday, we celebrated Jase’s second birthday.  It was a simple celebration, held at Gra-Gra’s house since our house is currently under construction.  Rather than a huge event with all our friends and family, we opted for a small gathering with just Jase’s grandparents and great-grandparents.

second birthdayJayden was there, as well as Kyndall’s friend Reagan, who was going to church with us the next day.

second birthday

second birthdayJase was so stinking excited about his tractor cake. That’s all he asked for before his party, and he has been telling everyone about it since then!  He very obviously enjoyed eating his cake and ended up consuming two HUGE pieces.

Most of our family gifted Jase with money to put towards a swingset for the new house.  (Our old one was demolished in some recent storms!)  He did have a few gifts to open, and he tore into those with glee.  Among his gifts were a collectible John Deere tractor, some clothes, a pop-gun, and a toy machine gun.

After gifts, we all sat around and swapped stories about this funny little guy.  He has filled our lives with so much joy in the short time that he has been here.  His personality is so BIG and he keeps us laughing all the time.

Forever Farmhouse Friday Update No. 6

farmhouse update

farmhouse update

We are slowly ticking through our forever farmhouse checklist over here.  Please pay attention to those columns on the front porch.  Don’t they look so much better than those 2×4’s from the last farmhouse update?  We also installed our lantern lights there by the front door and one more by the side door.

farmhouse

Our porch ceilings make me so happy.  The front porch is covered in blue slated vinyl.  The back porch is covered with corrugated metal.  I love how the different materials/colors add interest to our outdoor living spaces, where I am sure we will spend 90 precent of our time!

Our exterior lights are all installed–LED canlights, two outdoor ceiling fans, and the lanterns by the doors.  The HVAC is connected, so now we can heat (or cool) the house while we are painting.

Our sheetrock is complete and after several nights of Justin and my dad coming in looking like ghosts (from all the sheetrock dust), the house is finally clean enough to start painting!  They actually started the primer on the ceilings a bit last night, but they will do more paint this weekend.  We are also planning to start the tile in our shower and bathrooms this weekend. (And by we, I mean Justin.)

We are aiming for an early March move-in date, so fingers crossed everything works out and we can make that!

DIY Farmhouse Table
We are approaching the end of construction on our forever farmhouse, and every farmhouse needs a farmhouse table. I don’t know if you have shopped for a farmhouse table recently, but those babies can be expensive. Lucky for me, I have a talented husband and a great relationship with The Home Depot.  So we decided to partner with the Home Depot and build our own DIY farmhouse table.

Botox | Elamar Skin Science

This blog post is part one of a series in partnership with Elamar Skin Science. All services and products were complementary but all opinions are my own.

A few weeks ago, I was invited to visit Elamar Skin in Decatur, AL.  This invitation was extremely timely because I have been thinking about and researching skin care for my age.  I’m not getting any younger and I want to take care of the body/skin that I have now, so that I’m not trying to reverse tons of bad behaviors in a few years.  I jumped at the invitation and immediately scheduled a consultation with Mrs. Elaine Gill.

The consultation:

At my consultation, Mrs. Gill used the Vectra 3-D imaging system to analyze different components of my facial skin.  The Vectra system uses this 3-D imaging to determine skin’s volume and irregularities, as well as any sun damage or changes below the skin’s surface.  The whole process was amazing.  Mrs. Gill used the 3-D camera to take forward and side facing shots of my face.  She then connected the camera into the computer and immediately, my 3-D self was on the screen.  I have a bad habit of only applying sun screen in places where I tend to burn (typically my nose and upper cheeks) and this was evident from the 3-D image.  My chin and mouth area, where I rarely apply sunscreen, had much more sun damage than the rest of my face.

From this information, we were able to make a plan.  Dr. Gill came in and we talked about my concerns.  I had three:

  1. Aging gracefully.  I want to take the best possible care of my skin now so that it looks its best as I get older.
  2. I have one large wrinkle that runs across the middle of my forehead and two lines between my eyebrows (my “elevens”) that I have disliked for a while.  They have gotten deeper as I’ve gotten older and I would like to fix that.
  3. Above my lips, I have a dark line that appeared during pregnancy.  It’s like a mustache, without the hair.  I’m always trying to cover this up with makeup, and it’s nearly impossible.  I want that baby gone.

Dr. Gill combined my concerns and my Vectra analyzation to create a plan for my skin.  The first part of this journey was two-fold:  Botox for my forehead and “elevens” and Retin-A cream for the dark spots above my lips.

Botox:

Botox has been used in the cosmetic world since early 2002.  It relaxes the nerves and muscles to not only remove wrinkles, but to ease migraine headaches, sweating, and eyelid twitching.  Botox temporarily paralyzes the muscles, which also prevents new wrinkles from forming.

Dr. Gill cleansed my face and then decided on an injection plan:  four injections in my forehead and three between the eyes.  Each injection felt like a small pinprick.  (Don’t worry about scheduling your appointment in the middle of the day.  I had no swelling or bleeding.  Before I left the office, the friendly staff had reapplied my makeup and had me looking as good as, if not better than, new.)

Retin-A:

The second part of my treatment plan is ridding myself of these dark spots above my lips.  Dr. Gill prescribed a version of Retin-A cream, called Tretinoin.  Versions of Retin-A cream are used to promote cell renewal and reduce wrinkles.  Dr. Gill suggested that I apply the cream every other day, in the evening.

The verdict:

It has now been two weeks since my Botox injections.    During the first week, I noticed that my eyebrows raised funny.  I felt like they shot up higher and ‘pointier’ than usual.  My forehead felt puffy, but didn’t appear any fuller.  Within two weeks, this had all returned to normal and my wrinkles are g-o-n-e.

Botox

I would definitely recommend Botox injections if you are concerned about wrinkles:  current or future.  I also fervently recommend Dr. Gill and his staff at Elamar Skin Science.  They are both knowledgeable and personable.

The Tretinoin cream took a while to adjust to.  Mrs. Gill had cautioned me that my skin may get worse before it got better.  The cream dried my skin out and made it extremely sensitive for the first several days.  I even felt like my acne increased for the first few weeks.  Two weeks in and I am slowly started to see a reduction in the sensitivity, acne, and the dark spots above my lip.  It is also reducing the acne scars I have from years’ past.

I thoroughly enjoyed my visit to Elamar Skin Science and I can’t wait to try out some of their other services!  Questions?  Let me know in the comment section!
