Happy Second Birthday, Jase!

Today is my baby boy’s SECOND BIRTHDAY! I cannot even.  It seems like just this morning I was stuck on bed-rest, anxiously awaiting his arrival.  And today, he is TWO.

Stats:

Height: 32 1/2 inches

Weight: 22.2 pounds

This boy of ours is such a hoot.  He talks all the time and when we can’t understand what he is trying to tell us, he uses hand gestures to make us understand.  We love to make him say “more” in sign language and show us his own gesture for “cut”.

His trademark move is his lady-slaying wink.

second birthdayHe worships the ground his sisters walk on.  (And the feeling is mutual.)  He thinks he is just as big as they are.  If he gets something–a drink, a snack, candy–he thinks he needs two extra so that each of the girls can have one.

He is such a BOY.  He think poots are hilarious and will cackle if someone says the word “poop”.  He loves playing ball and driving his tractor and working with his Daddy and Pops.

He absolutely completes our family.

Happy second birthday, Jase Allen West!

Reality Check: Messy House Tour

Messy House Tour

We are counting down the days until move-in day and I am all kinds of crazy. Trying to make last-minute design decisions and plan the move and pre-organize all the things. Before we move, I thought it would be fun to share a current messy house tour with you guys. Because you know I love to keep it real around here.  (And because I loved the idea when I saw it on some of my favorite blogs:  Bower Power and Young House Love.)

We are currently living in the future garage of our forever home. We are crammed into a 2-bedroom, 1-and-a-half bathroom construction zone.

Messy House Tour

This is the view of our living room’s “good side”.  Not great, but not too bad.  A few toys scattered about, a blanket thrown haphazardly over the couch.  But overall, a livable space.Messy House Tour

And then, behind the couch.  This area contains all the tools being used to construct our forever home.  There are also four new toilets in that pile, as well as a 36″ farmhouse sink.  A boxed-up security system, three ceiling fans, two industrial pendant lights.  Oh, and an often-used treadmill (<–insert sarcasm here).

Messy House TourThe kitchen is the one bright spot in our house.  It stays relatively clean, with only a wayward tool or two charging on the counter.  And a cow on the floor.  (This photo was taken right before dinner, which explains the cups and plates and pitcher of tea.)

Messy House Tour

The kids room is surprisingly decent, considering all three of them share one large space.  Since Jase’s bed is never slept in, it has become a haven for extra blankets and stuffed animals and blue jeans.

Messy House Tour

Our bedroom is a disaster zone.  Storage bins, boxes full of can lights, random wall art, dirty husband socks.  Everything finds it’s temporary home here.

Regardless of all this mess, I love our temporary home.  I love that we all congregate in the usable area of the living room and watch Gilmore Girls.  I love that we are living right here in this construction zone, even though I will never get rid of all the sheetrock dust.  And I really love that in less than two months (fingers-crossed) we will be moving into our forever home and transforming this place back to the garage that it was meant to be!

My 2017 Bullet Journal and How I’m Making It Work For Me

2017 Bullet Journal

2017 Bullet Journal
I’m a big fan of the bullet journal and have used it, loosely, for the past several years.  My 2017 bullet journal and I are inseparable, though, because I have learned how to make it work for me.

The beauty of a bullet journal is that you can customize it to fit your needs.  One of my goals for this year was to journal more and my 2017 bullet journal is the key to making that happen.  I purchased this Moleskine dotted journal and pulled out my favorite Micron pens.

Before setting up my journal, I made a list of what I wanted to accomplish with this journal.  I knew I wanted the main purpose to be a memory keeper/journal, but I also wanted to use the space as more than that.  My list looked like this:

  • journal
  • “brain dump”; blog notes, to-do lists, etc.
  • book log
  • self-care/health tracker

How I set up my 2017 Bullet Journal:

2017 Bullet JournalEvery bullet journal begins with an index.  I wrote in a page header and then left a few pages to fill in later.

2017 Bullet JournalI followed up with a few pages reserved for a book log:  books that I read in 2017 with a quick 1-5 star rating.

2017 Bullet JournalAfter the book log, I designated four pages for blog “stuff”.  One page to keep up with OAL financial info, one page for OAL branding notes, and two pages for 2017 social media stats.

2017 Bullet JournalWith those yearly trackers out of the way, I am now ready to start January.  The first page of my January journal was a habit tracker.  Another 2017 goal is to improve my self-care.  This includes things like having a quiet time every day, drinking enough water, exercising, and getting adequate rest.  I like the idea of being able to color in the squares as I complete the activity.  I also like being able to have a monthly overview of how this goal is going!

2017 Bullet JournalRight behind the January habit tracker begins my journal pages.  Each day looks a little different.  Some days are journaled in paragraph form, others in bullet form.  Some days have to-do lists stuck in the midst.

2017 Bullet JournalAt the very end of my 2017 bullet journal, on the last two pages, I included a bible reading chart.  I printed this one from Women Living Well and adhered it using double sided tape.  Hopefully this will help me stay on track to read the entire bible this year!

A few tips I’ve discovered along the way:

  1. Keep it simple.  If you search for “Bullet Journal” on Instagram, you’ll find lots of elaborately decorated journals.  They’re gorgeous, of course, but I don’t have time for all that.  (Note:  My first few pages are decorated, but only because I set them up at the end of 2016, when I was on winter break.  Trust me when I say that no other pages in my journal will be pretty!)
  2. Use what works.  Change your system monthly until you get it right.
  3. Make it work for YOU.  In previous years, I’ve attempted to use my bullet journal the way other people used theirs.  I ended up dropping off sometime around March and defeated the whole purpose of my bullet journal.  By recording what I want to record, I’ll have more stick-with-it power.

Do you use a bullet journal?  Do you have any tips to add?

Forever Home Update No. 5

Forever Home

Forever Home

It’s been a little while since my last forever home update, but not much has been accomplished. Oh, much has been accomplished, but not much that you can actually see.  We are steadily headed toward the finish-line of move in day and I could not be more excited!

Forever Home

The house exterior is almost complete.  We need to relocate all those extra bricks and dispose of some vinyl scraps.  The columns and shutters both need to be installed.  The HVAC units will go where all those thick wires are sticking out at the left of the above photo.

The right side of the house (that you can’t see) is still unfinished.  That is the side our garage doors will go on, but since we are still living in the garage, we aren’t quite ready to put those in yet.  The vinyl on that side and the garage doors will all be installed in a few weeks, a little closer to move-in day.

Forever Home

Forever Home

Sheetrock is so close to being finished.  The cold temperatures have slowed down the drying process, so our guys are having to wait an extra day between mud coats.  We hope to have the sheetrock completed next week.

As soon as the sheetrock guys are finished, we will go in and give everything a good cleaning.  Windows will need to be scraped and cleaned, walls will be wiped down and the floor will be swept, vacuumed, and possibly even mopped.  That sheetrock dust makes a HUGE mess!

The next step will be PAINTING! I have a general idea of what colors I want to use, but you know as well as I do that there are 16.4 million different shades of gray and white out there.  Do any of you have a favorite gray paint color?  Or white?

Christmas 2016, A Holiday Recap

Christmas 2016

Christmas 2016I love Christmas. I love the traditions that we hold and how our normally chaotic lives slow down for a week surrounding the holiday. I love giving gifts and enjoying holiday meals with my family. It’s just the best time, you know?

Christmas 2016We celebrated with Justin’s family the first weekend in December. All the kids were given Christmas head-wear.

We celebrated with my dads parents the second weekend in December, but I failed to get any photos!

Christmas 2016A few days before Christmas I braved the kitchen with all three kids to make homemade Christmas cookies for Santa.

Christmas 2016On Christmas Eve, we spent the evening at Meme and Papa’s house.  After dinner, the kids all opened their gifts.  We took our annual Christmas photo.  Jase received his favorite gift of the year–a battery operated play chainsaw.  He “cut” Meme’s tree, all of our legs, the furniture in our house, and anything else he could think of.  The chainsaw had to travel with us for days.

Christmas 2016

Christmas 2016Christmas morning 2016 arrived with gorgeous, spring-like weather.  Perfect, since Santa brought bubble balls, Eno hammocks and a John Deere tractor.

Christmas evening is always celebrated at Pops and Gra-Gra’s house.  The kids were gifted a new trampoline (since their old one was ruined in the storm), a few other little toys, and lots of new underwear!

We played games (which Justin and I always dominate) and had the greatest time.  We fell, exhausted, into bed sometime around midnight.   Merry Christmas 2016!

Hello, 2017 + One Little Word

Hello 2017

Hello 2017Hello, 2017! I am so excited to meet you! This is the year we will move into our forever home. (Hopefully, in just two short months!)  This is the year we will host birthday parties for year #2, #9, and #11. There will be highs and lows, dinners out and dinners in, vacations, and surprises. I can’t wait to see what’s in store!

A few 2017 goals:

Start and keep a journal.  I’ve purchased this Moleskine and I plan to use it bullet-journal style, but with more thoughts and memories and less to-do lists.

Make self-care a priority.  Drink water. Eat healthy. Exercise. Rest.  I don’t want to lose weight but I do want to be fit.  I used to be so in love with running and exercising and I would like to get back to that.  To feeling strong and confident in my own skin.

Grow Our Alabama Life. I say this every year and every year my little corner of the internet has gotten a tad bit bigger. After five years, I still really love blogging and I look forward to the opportunities and partnerships that will happen as a result of OAL.

#OneLittleWord 2017:

I usually choose one little word to focus on for the year.  My one little word for 2016 was savor and all I really did was include it in my instagram hashtags–silly, but it did help keep the idea of “savoring” at the forefront of my mind.

My word for 2016 is surrender. Justin and I made the decision several months ago to surrender everything– our lives, our jobs, our house, our family–so that God’s will can be done in our lives.  We have been given so much and we want to use what we have been given to bless others.

Our hope is that our entire year will be wrapped up in that one little word:  surrender.  Thy will be done.  Cheers, 2017!

What about YOU?  Share with me one of YOUR goals or hopes or dreams for 2017!

Merry Christmas 2016

Merry Christmas, friends! Can I just tell you that this is my favorite Santa picture, ever?

I’m taking the rest of the year off to spend time with my family, but I’ll be back in January in full swing.  I have lots to share– 2017 goals, house updates, book lists, DIY projects and more.  Be sure to subscribe (in the right sidebar, if you haven’t already!) so that you’ll never miss a post.

Forever Home Friday Update No. 4

If you are new here, welcome! Let me give you a quick recap.  In August of 2016, we began building our forever home.  We are our own contractors and are doing a large portion of the work ourselves.  (And when I say ourselves, I really mean my wonderful husband and terrific dad.)  You can find the beginning of our building story here or just jump right to the last update here.

Justin has been telling me to expect a move-in date sometime around the end of March, but last week he slipped up and told someone it may be the end of February, so I am holding him to that date!  Since my last update, they have finished our electrical–wave all the praise hands!  I plan to do a post with all the little things we thought to add, but for now just know that we have outlets everywhere.  {In every single nook and cranny and along every four feet of wall space.  Because heaven forbid we need to plug something in and not be able to. <–This is a little joke between Justin and I.  He’s a big fan of outlets, I don’t want them messing up my pretty walls.}

Our outside vinyl is well on it’s way to being complete.  Please forgive the sub-par photo above.  This time-change/getting dark so early is killing my house photography.

Our insulation is about half-way finished.  (I took a photo of it stapled into the wall, but I think I’ll save you that.  If you are as excited as me about all these little details, just let me know in the comments and I’ll be glad to include the insulation photo. {wink})

The plan is for our sheetrock guys to begin work sometime next week.  I’m not sure how much work they’ll get done as we are nearing the holiday, but I’m hoping it’s a lot!  As soon as the sheetrock is finished, we’ll begin painting.  Next up will be installing flooring and cabinets, giving everything a good cleaning, and MOVING IN!!!  I think all that can be accomplished by the end of February, don’t you?

Our running to-do list:

  • Clear land. completed August 25, 2016
  • Pour footer. completed August 30, 2016
  • First plumbing and electrical rough-in. completed September 7, 2016
  • Pour slab. completed September 10, 2016
  • Framing. started October 3 and completed October 20, 2016
  • Roofing. completed October 30, 2016
  • Second plumbing rough-in. completed November 11, 2016
  • HVAC rough-in. completed November 17, 2016
  • Brick skirt and steps. completed November 18, 2016
  • Vinyl siding. in progress
  • Electrical. completed December 5, 2016
  • Hang insulation. in progress
  • Shutters.

  • Tile shower.
  • Paint.
  • Install lights.
  • Floors.
  • Cabinets.
  • Clean.
  • Move in.

PS: We have done a large part of this construction ourselves, but we have used some amazing contractors as well.  If you are local and are planning any type of construction project, please feel free to contact me so that I can pass on my list of names!

Mature-Themed Fairy Tales

The following post is a collaborative post.

Mature-themed fairy tales that are as good as Disney

It’s common knowledge that fairy tales are made for kids. However, did you know that authors make fairy tale stories for mature people, too? Apart from Disney’s writers who create happy endings, there are some authors who craft stories with a darker twist. As many great books do, adult-themed fairy tales explore the deepest corners of the human mind and present stories that are often bizarre and unsettling.

Mature-themed fairy tales are not constrained within the walls of libraries; they go beyond the pages of books and into video games. Have you ever heard of American McGhee’s Alice? It uses the same character that followed a rabbit into Wonderland. However, instead of a kid-friendly version, the game is actually a third-person psychological horror action video game. Unofficially, it presents itself as the sequel to Lewis Carroll’s Alice novels.

Snow White and Little Red Riding Hood also have mature-themed games. While not as creepy as American McGhee’s Alice, they do target the more mature demographic as they’re hosted on the pay-to-play gaming site Pocket Fruity. The “Miss White” game uses themes and characters from the original Snow White while “Miss Red” uses illustrations of a more mature Red Riding Hood.

But modern, adult-themed fairy tale novels do not pattern model themselves on Disney characters. They’re stand-alone titles that can be enjoyed by adults even without knowing the backstories of Belle, Jasmine, and Ariel.

Below are some of the best, fairy tales that target the more mature audience.

Mature-Themed Fairy Tales

The Night Circus
Written by Erin Morgenstern

The Night Circus takes readers into the strange and mysterious world of circuses that appear randomly at night and leave entire towns with the same unexpectedness. The novel perfectly depicts the surreal characteristics of the fairy tale, complete with plots that are never really explained fully. Books that have hanging plots can really be annoying but not in this fairy tale. Morgenstern excellently narrates the story as if magic was part of everyday life.

The Great Night
Written by: Chris Adrian

The Great Night is a mixed bag of heartbreaking, vulgar, strange, and funny. The fairy personas are quite similar to some Shakespearean characters but the rest are Adrian’s original creations. The novel is known in literary circles as the retelling of Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream

The Great Night presents the interaction on one, fateful night between the faerie kingdom that is about to be destroyed and three humans who are heartbroken due to lost relationships.

The Ocean at the End of the Lane
Written by Neil Gaiman

Neil Gaiman is the rockstar of the literary world, and his storytelling always makes his readers ask at the end of every page, “and then what happened?” The Ocean at the End of the Lane is a wonderful masterpiece that stitches together fiction and the land of the living.

The book begins with the unnamed protagonist returning to his hometown for a funeral. He revisits his old home and remembers a young girl named Lettie who claims that the pond behind her home is an ocean. He stops at the home where Lettie had lived and mysteriously starts remembering forgotten incidents from the past.

Five Things

It’s been a little while since I’ve shared anything family-related on the blog. Our house has taken center stage for a while now. Hopefully, we are on the downhill slope of that, though. Today, I want to share with you five things that have been happening lately.

ouralabamalife1Jase got his first haircut. He did SO well. He sat in the chair just like a little man. He didn’t move and when she asked him to turn his head or to look down, he would follow her instructions immediately. It was so precious! And he looks so GQ now.

ouralabamalife3

Against my wishes, our elf Messy made her reappearance at our house.

ouralabamalife2An EF3 tornado touched down 5 miles from our house. It destroyed several homes and business, but no one was injured. We were in the shelter when the storm cell went over and I immediately knew that it was more than just a thunderstorm. The air shifted and my ears popped and then the entire house seemed to crack and pop at once.  We were lucky–the only things that fell victim were our trampoline and playset.

ouralabamalife4Basketball season is in full swing.  We are about halfway through and Kyndall has scored 10 points so far and made countless steals.

ouralabamalife

Libby performed in her first ever school choir concert and rocked it!! You can see a short video of her here.  You guys, performing (singing or dancing) is her thing and I love watching her!

I am attempting at least one fun Christmas “thing” every day during the month of December.  You can follow along with that here.

Let’s chat:  What is one thing YOU have been doing lately?
