Spring Wish-List

The weather is finally a little warmer, the time has changed, and birds wake me up in the morning with their incessant chirping.  Spring fever has hit!  I feel the need to brighten/freshen up some things around our house, so I’ve made a wish-list for all things SPRING!  Enjoy 🙂

Spring PillowsThese cheerful indoor/outdoor pillows.  These have been on my list for months, and right now they are on sale! YAY!

A metal initial for our door.  I have one of these painted red and green that I use on my Christmas tree, but I would love a new one to paint either yellow or turquoise for my front door.  (They are super easy to spray paint any color you choose!)

Spring WishlistOrion Convection Cooker.  Actually, we already have this and can’t wait to start using it.  Brisket, ribs, tri-tip….mmmm!

Spring ShoesSpring shoes for my girls, like these Toms-look-alikes in gray zebra.  The girls love this brand of shoe–they say they are super comfy!!

What’s on your spring wish-list?

March Goals

MarchGoalsYes, I know we are a solid week (plus a few days) into March already. But ya’ll! This week, we have had 8 inches of snow, 1/4 inch of ice, and 70 degree days in between. Welcome to Alabama. Whew!  Between the weather and sicknesses, I have had all three kids home with me every single day for the past two weeks except for 2. And in case you aren’t aware, nothing productive happens when you are taking care of three kids!

I am allowing myself a lot of grace with these goals.

So, here’s my plan for March:

  1. Daily bible study.  I’ve been making my way through Luke and plan to start 1 and 2 Timothy next.
  2. Complete the remaining book pages and submit for publication.  I am in charge of the yearbook at school and the final deadline is March 16, so there is no wiggle room with this one.
  3. Dinners at the table at least three nights a week.
  4. Do yoga every day, even if it’s only for 15 minutes.  I lost all muscle and flexibility when I was pregnant, so it’s time I start working on that.  Plus, yoga is super relaxing.
  5. Clean out and organize my closet.
  6. Switch out the girls seasonal clothes.  (Hopefully we are past our cold weather and I can pull out the spring outfits!)
  7. No eating out until Spring Break.  We have a trip planned at the end of March, so I know we’ll be eating out then.  I’m also allowing exceptions for girls’ date days.  We already have ‘dates’ planned with both girls, so those days won’t count either.

And that’s it.  While 2015 has been a super awesome year for us, it hasn’t been very productive.  We’ve welcomed Jase and spent a few weeks adjusting to life with newborn.  In the first six weeks of his life, every one of us (except him!) had the flu, both girls had strep throat, and Libby had a horrible fever virus that had her feeling worse than when she had the flu. We’ve had 8,754 snow days.  I am so ready to get routines going and things accomplished.

What goals do you have for the remainder of March?

Friday Favorites

FridayFavorites1Today, just for fun, I thought I’d share with you a few of my favorite things right now.

For baby:

Microfleece Swaddle Sleeper by HALO.

FisherPrice Rocking Sleeper.

For the girls:

Washable Watercolors and these brushes.  This drawing pad is the best, too.

Apple TV to watch all the shows.  On repeat, ’cause thats how my girls roll.

For me:

This Sparkling White Grape Juice.  They served it during our celebratory meal at the hospital and now I am addicted.  (FYI I accidentally bought apple instead of white grape the other day. It was a travesty.)

Home Is Where My People Are by Sophie Hudson.  This book, ya’ll.  It keeps me giggling!

this Ellie Holcomb cd.  Just beautiful.

Now tell me–what is your favorite thing right now?

CurrentlyFor the last week and a half, the girls have been delayed or out of school every single day due to inclement weather. For those of us in the south, that means the temperature is below freezing. I know it sounds crazy to those of you who operate in these conditions all winter long, but us southerners just aren’t equipped to deal with the cold/ice/snow. On last Friday alone, our small town fire department was called out to seventeen (yes, seventeen!) wrecks due to ice on the roads. In our defense, we aren’t used to driving on icy roads AND we don’t have the equipment to distribute salt or sand like our northern friends.

IMG_0705We’ve had a lot of hot chocolate and popcorn around here. Because, apparently, that’s what we eat when it’s cold?! We did get lucky with a dusting of snow on Friday, just enough for a small bit of snow cream.

My most favorite moment happened on Monday–as an avid reader myself, it warms my heart that my girls like to read. Even better, they got baby brother in on some Sneetches action. (Speaking of which, we are working on a list of our favorite books to share in celebration of Read Across America week!)

Then, yesterday morning, it happened. BAM!! Kyndall woke up with a tummy ache. She complains of this quite often, so we went to church anyways but when I picked her up from kids’ worship, I knew she was serious this time. (Yea, I’m shining my Mom of the Year award as I type this…) The fever hit around 3:00 and so we’ll be making a trip to the doctor today at 1:00. My money’s on strep throat.  Is anybody else as ready as me for spring to get here already?

What I’m Reading:

If You Were In My House Today–I love real posts like these.  In this internet/social media age, we often come across as perfect to others who don’t know us so well.  And this post? Well it just sets the record straight.  Oh, and that promissory note thing? Lets just say my I.O.U. to the girls is bigger than I care to share….

The Grit and the Glory– If you don’t read anything else this week, read this.  Even when we can’t see God’s plan in things, we can rest assured that He is there.

How To Take Care of Yourself When Your Job is Taking Care of Others— As moms, we spend the majority of our time taking care of our people and neglecting ourselves.  How many times have we given the last bite of our food to one of our kids, or passed up our ‘me’ time to do something with them?  We can’t take care of our people if we ourselves aren’t taken care of first.

FringeHoursBook

I just purchased The Fringe Hours by Jessica Turner and plan to join in on the Bloom study of it. The study begins March 2, so you still have plenty of time to get your book and join in.  Personally, I’ve never participated in a Bloom study before, but I’ve heard wonderful things and am super excited about diving into this book!  Get more info and find the reading schedule here.  Also, if you are joining in, please let me know in the comments! 🙂

Taco Casserole

TacoCasseroleI don’t cook a lot, but one of my favorite things to cook (and eat!) is this taco casserole. It’s super yummy and something the whole family will actually eat. I got the recipe from a teacher friend a few years ago and have tweaked it to the way we like it (i.e.: taken out all the things we didn’t like!). Bonus: like chili, it’s tastes even better when it’s super cold out, like today!

TacoCasserole1You’ll need:

1 pound ground beef
1 can cream of mushroom soup
1 can cream of chicken soup
1/2 cup milk
1 can chopped green chilies
2 cups shredded cheddar cheese
Tortilla chips

salsa
shredded lettuce
sour cream

Start by browning the ground beef. Drain well. Combine drained beef with soups, milk, and green chilies. Heat well. In a 9 by 13 casserole dish, layer meat mixture, 1 cup of cheese, and crushed tortilla chips. Repeat.

Bake at 325 degrees for 25 minutes.

TacoCasserole3Optional: top with salsa, shredded lettuce, and sour cream.

What is your favorite recipe? Share with me in the comments!

Lately

We have been doing a whole lot of nothing around here lately and it has been absolutely wonderful.  Basketball is over and between bed rest and a new baby and the freezing temperatures outside, we do not leave this house.  Well, the girls leave to go to school, but that’s about it.

You know what’s great about being at home?  I get to spend it with my people.  Like, really spend it with them instead of running around doing crazy things.  (All photos are straight from my iPhone, so please ignore crappy quality.)

We’ve played 723 games of Clue.  Justin needed a little help, so Jase stepped up.

DaddyAndJaseWe’ve read books and watched tv and even played games on our iPads together (hello HayDay!).

We were proactive and got our Valentines ready before the night before the party.

ValentinesMal-Mal visited the girls for lunch at school.  As usual, K ran out before a picture could be taken.

LibbyandMalWe worked together on Kyndall’s Valentine’s day box–it had to be movie themed and she chose Wall-E.  I was so impressed with her creativity on this–she had all the pieces picked out and put together before I even found the brown paint!

FullSizeRenderK went to volleyball camp and made it in the news paper.  Apparently, she needed a shoulder massage in the middle of all that hard work?

KyndallNewspaperAnd I have cooked almost every single night.  If you know me, or have read this blog any, you know that I deserve an award or something for that!  Which leads me to say that I am out of dinner ideas, so please share any good but simple recipes in the comments below 🙂

No-Fuss Make-Up Must Haves

No Fuss MaWhile we’re not on the subject of makeup, I thought I’d take a minute to share my no-fuss routine.  (If you’re a guy, or not interested in makeup, go read this post about a surprise visitor.)

I’m a simple girl–I am most happy in jeans and a t-shirt and do not like to spend a lot of time getting ready.  I also don’t have the complexion to go without makeup, so I’ve perfected a quick, no-fuss makeup routine over the years.  This is even more important now that I have three kids–I need to be shower to clothes-on in 30 minutes or less.

I always start with Clinique Stay Matte liquid foundation and Clinique Stay Matte pressed powder.  I have used Clinique off and on since high school and haven’t found anything I like better.  Tip:  The foundation needs to have a minute to dry before applying powder–if not, it gets splotchy.  I usually apply foundation and then brush my teeth before applying powder, just so you know.

I’m a big fan of Almay Eye Primer for Green Eyes (even if you don’t really have green eyes).  It is a shimmery nude color, so it could be used by itself or as a primer.  It keeps my eye makeup on all day long.

Next, I use Almay I-Color Bold Nudes for Green Eyes.  If I’m feeling extra fashionable, I’ll dust on a little Bare Minerals eye shimmer in Celestine.  I follow this up with Palladio eye liner in Black Brown.

After searching high and low for the perfect mascara, I finally found it in High Impact Mascara by Clinique.

And the one thing I never leave the house without is lip color.  If I don’t have something on my lips, it looks like I have no lips.  I have two favorites right now– E.L.F. matte lip color in Praline as a sort of lip liner and the Ulta lip crayon in American Girl.

What make-up products can you not live without?

30 Thoughts From 30 Years

30 Thoughts from 30 Years www.ouralabamalife.comLast week, I turned the big 3-0.  It’s funny how the closer you get to a certain age, the younger that age seems.  I never really thought 30 was old, but I do remember thinking turning 3o would be big.  Monumental, even.  And while it was definitely anti-climatic, it was perfect.  I spent the day with my sweet 2 week old baby boy and 2 bed-ridden, flu-infested (but still sweet) girls.  I had bacon ranch quesadillas from Chili’s (my favorite!) for supper.  The evening was spent relaxing with my little family of 5 and after the girls went to bed, Justin and I shared some great “old” stories.

I’ve learned a lot in 30 years, and I thought I’d share some of those things with you.  In no certain order, 30 thoughts from 30 years…

  1. Family is the most important thing.  Family doesn’t mean just relatives (or even all of them), but a few super close friends as well.
  2. Marriage is hard, but worth it.
  3. Sometimes you will love your husband because you do and sometimes you will love him because you have to.
  4. Eat the candy bar, drink the Mt. Dew, have that milkshake–just don’t do all three every single day.  Everything is ok, in moderation.
  5. Write.  Lists, memories, stories, journals–whatever it may be, put it on paper.  Or computer.
  6. Don’t compare.  Comparison truly is the thief of joy.
  7. Take care of yourself.  As a mother, it’s easy to let myself go.  If I don’t take care of myself first, I can’t take care of my family.  For me, this means getting plenty of rest as much rest as possible, drinking lots of water, and exercising when I can.
  8. Spend more time making my people happy.  Spend less time worrying about everyone else.
  9. Go outside.  Fresh air and sunshine makes everything better.
  10. Take the trip.  The greatest experiences I’ve had have been while traveling.
  11. It’s ok to ask for help.
  12. If you aren’t making mistakes, you aren’t trying hard enough.
  13. Take up for your kids when they are right, but don’t be oblivious when they are wrong.
  14. Reading makes you smarter.  Books, magazines, newspapers, blogs.
  15. Happiness doesn’t just happen–it’s a daily choice.  Sometimes a minute-by-minute choice.
  16. Bible study and prayer are essential.
  17. Always have a dream, goal, or task you are working towards.
  18. Be present.  Quantity of time doesn’t matter if that time lacks quality.
  19. Have at least one hobby you love.  Bonus points if you have more than one.
  20. Wear mismatched socks.  Having it all together is just boring.
  21. Believe that people are good.  If they prove otherwise, deal with it then.
  22. When in doubt, laugh it out.
  23. The bigger the earrings, the closer to God.  Or something like that.
  24. Never wake a sleeping baby.
  25. Sing, even if you don’t sound good.  It makes your heart happy.
  26. One day your house will be clean and organized.  Today is not that day.
  27. If you wait until your ready–to have a baby, buy a new house, start a new venture–you’ll wait for the rest of your life.
  28. Be wise with your money, but not tight.  An emergency fund is important, but you have to live life, too.
  29. When you say you are praying for someone, do it.  Stop right then and whisper a prayer to God.
  30. Let it go.  The stress, the anger, the resentment–all that junk that weighs you down.  Just let-it-go!

For Your Weekend

I’ve had a lot of time over the past few weeks to browse the internet.  When you’re lying on your left side, browsing the internet is about the only thing you can do.  It’s also the way I stay awake during all these middle-of-the-night feedings now.  With all this browsing, I’ve found quite a few thought-provoking things I thought I’d share.  So grab a cup of coffee, prop your feet up, and read away.

Burn the Candles– Guys, this is our time.  We don’t get these days back.  Stop saving the good dishes, the good towels, the candles, the post-its notes (<–my friend Carrie saves all her cute post-its instead of writing on them).  Let’s use them up and make our people feel special.  We are worth the good stuff.

You’re Still in Process…“You’re in the middle of the beautiful process of becoming.”  There are many things I am good at, but decorating my home is not one of them.  My mom and grandmother know exactly how high photos should be hung, which piece of furniture should go where, and how many knick-knacks should go on each shelf.  Not me.  Which may be what caught my ear in this post by Holly.  I don’t have to be the best at everything.  I don’t even have to be the best at anything.  I am in process.

A Complicated Peace— Much like Sarah, I too have full intentions of making myself a fool over this sweet new addition to our family.  He is my later-baby, my cry-of-the-heart baby, my last baby.  And while I have felt nothing but the greatest, greatest joy over him, my pregnancy and his birth are an altar for encountering God.  Because he is nothing short of a miracle.

Why I Think Jesus Would Be On Facebook–Yes.  Just, yes.
