4 Natural Products I’m Loving, Vol. 1

natural products

natural productsHey guys! If you follow me on social media, you know that I’m playing nurse this week to a recovering patient.  (If you don’t follow me on social media, my youngest daughter had her tonsils removed on Monday!)  Coincidentally, the events leading up to her tonsillectomy are the same events that led to the research behind this post.

I’ve been researching natural products.  I’ve become very aware of how many chemicals we put into, on, and around our bodies daily.  (Yes, this is the same girl who had Botox and dermal filler and drinks Mt. Dews religiously.  I’m not giving those things up, but every little bit counts, right?)

I started a little over a year ago slowly replacing our normal products with natural products.  I did not (and will not) throw away all our cleaning and makeup products and go purchase all new natural ones–I just wait until a product is empty and I replace it with a natural product.  (I don’t have the budget for a cleansing like that!)

After a year of this process, I’ve found quite a few favorite natural products.  I’m sharing some of those with you today, and I’ll share even more later. {Affiliate links are used in this post. Shopping these links will result in a few extra pennies for OAL at no extra cost to you.  As always, your support of OAL is appreciated!}

4 Natural Products I’m Loving

natural productsMethod Cleaning Products.  Method is probably the natural product I’ve used the longest.  It was the first thing I bought last year (maybe even longer than that) when I started thinking about using natural products.  I love the way it smells–Clementine and Grapefruit are my favorites.  I love the way it cleans.  The spray works well on everything–my laminate countertops, my wood kitchen table, our concrete floor, my mirrors.  Our cleaning lady (oh how I miss her!) was converted after seeing how brightly the Method made my microwave shine!

natural productsTom’s of Maine toothpaste.  Tom’s leaves my mouth feeling super squeaky clean–almost like when you leave the dentist office.  I’ve been using this toothpaste for several months and I immediately noticed a whitening of my teeth.  Tom’s doesn’t have that minty fresh taste I’ve gotten used to with other brands, even though the label boasts “mint” flavor.  It doesn’t taste bad;  it doesn’t actually have a taste at all.  Tom’s has a strawberry flavor for the kids that I haven’t been able to convince my girls’ to try yet, but I’m still working on that!

natural productsBurt’s Bees lip products.  I would be embarrassed to count how many Burt’s Bees lip products we have lying around.  The lip shimmer is my favorite, but I have the “real” lipstick, too.  In addition to being natural, this product feels (and smells!) so good.  I love how much softer it makes my lips feel.  The lipstick and lip shimmer both have color in them and the color stays on just as well as any other lip product I’ve tried (except for that 12-hour Cover Girl stuff!).

natural productsDickinson’s Original Witch Hazel.  I use this as a toner on my face, after my face wash.  (My face wash isn’t yet natural, but I am open to your recommendations!) I noticed a huge difference in my face following my acne facial a few months ago, but within days of using this witch hazel as a toner, the remaining bumps disappeared.  {Disclaimer: I think hormonal acne is something I (and most women) will always deal with, but if I can reduce the amount of time that hormonal acne is visible, I call that a win!}

A few other natural products I’m trying, but with-holding judgment on are:

A service that I have enjoyed using to explore natural products is Grove Collaborative.  Grove Collaborative Right now, if you sign up using my link, you’ll receive $10 off your first purchase PLUS a Method superstars set retailing at $30 for FREE when you spend $20.

I’m curious–do you use any natural products in your home?  I would LOVE to hear which natural products you love, OR which ones you’ve tried and disliked.

Life With: Ashley Clark

Life WIth

Hi there!  Happy Monday! Today is the first day of our Spring Break and I could not possibly be more excited.  Spring fever had kicked in majorly at school and we were all needing a little time off (most of all, the teachers!)

Today, I want you to meet my friend, Ashley.  Ashley is an adoptive mom to sweet little Isaac and has some really amazing advice to share about foster care, adoption, and faith.  I know you will love Ashley just as much as I do!

Welcome, Ashley!

Life WIthTell us a little about yourself.
I am 32. I’m a wife and mama. I’ve been married for over 11 years to my hubby, Micah. We have a gorgeous (I can say that because I had nothing to do with his looks haha) two-year-old little boy Isaac that is our miracle baby!

Share your testimony.
I was saved when I was 15 but I struggled off and on for years with believing if it was real or not. I’m sure God spent a lot of time shaking His head at me during these times.  After Isaac came to live with us I started to question my salvation again. This was a very tough season in my life. My faith was seriously tested and I had to, for the first time, lay something at the feet of Jesus and trust Him completely with it. Which is nearly impossible for someone like me that wants to be in control of every situation. I spent more time on my knees than not during the two years we waited to see if Isaac would be ours.

I felt God at work,  and I have no doubt that He was with me during this time. He answered prayer after prayer but still, I worried that I wasn’t really saved. So finally I had enough. I was probably at the lowest point of our adoption journey. We had just lived through a month and a half where we were faced with the very real possibility that we would lose Isaac. That was the hardest thing I have ever faced. I had a complete breaking point and not having the comfort of knowing without a doubt that I was saved was just too much. So one Sunday after church Micah and I prayed together and since that day I have had no doubts.  A very wise man (Michael Mason) once told me that our salvation is not a feeling, its a promise. I have that written in my bible and I look at it from time to time to remind myself. Looking back I believe I was truly saved at 15 but either way, I have no doubt now.

It is so brave of you to publically “own” your doubts about salvation.  I think so many of us struggle with this privately.  Do you have any advice for someone who may be feeling that same way?
My advice would be to talk to someone you trust that you know is a Christian.  I talked to both my pastors (Michael Mason and Richie Thompson), my father in law, a close friend and of course, Micah, over the years I struggled.  It ultimately came down to me and God but their counsel made a difference.  Michael Mason did tell me that Satan can and will attach your belief of your salvation.  I was shocked.  I had never even considered this. I believe it to be very true.

Also, don’t be ashamed.  Shame plagued me for years.  I was a Sunday school teacher for years and married to a deacon–how could I question my salvation or better yet not even be saved? This was my thought process.  It was all lies.  After I professed my belief in Jesus and was baptized last year not one person questioned me.  I was only met with love and happiness by my fellow believers.

You are a foster/adoptive parent.  Is this something you’ve always dreamed of doing?  What events/circumstances led to you being open to foster care/adopting?
I have always had a desire to adopt but never in my wildest dreams thought I would adopt through the foster system.  Not long after Micah and I were married we started trying to have a family.  Unfortunately, we soon discovered that this would not come easily to us.  We spent the next 7-8 years working with fertility specialists, trying on our own and just taking breaks to enjoy our marriage.  In 2014, after lots of prayer, we felt that God was telling us our family would be built through adoption.  I immediately told God “just not foster care!”  I just couldn’t imagine that for us.  The thought of loving a child and then possibly losing them was just too much for me to bear.  BUT God had other plans.
We had all of our paper work filled out and ready to submit to an adoption agency and we just felt something was off.  God was putting foster care everywhere in our paths.  We had a precious boy in our AWANA class at church that was in foster care, some friends from church had just adopted their two children through the foster system and another friend from church actually worked at our local DHR as a social worker for foster children.  We just couldn’t get away from it.  So after more prayer, we went into a meeting with our friend from church at DHR and left knowing without a doubt that this is what we were supposed to do.
From there we applied to be foster/adoptive parents, took the required classes, readied our home and had numerous home studies and back ground checks. Then we waited. We were approved and licensed as foster parents in November 2014.  We received the call that forever changed our lives on January 29th, 2015.  It’s a BOY!!  I will never forget that phone call or the first time we met our precious boy.  He was 6 months old and absolutely perfect.  He is now 2 1/2.  We have spent the past two years having home visits, birth parent visits, and court dates. Its been a roller coaster of emotions but so worth it.  He brings us so much joy and we know without a doubt he was meant to be our son.
We officially adopted Isaac December 14th, 2016.  We are so thankful for the seasons of unknowns and waiting.  It has tested our faith and made us stronger.  God never once left us and we are forever changed by our journey.

What is the biggest struggle you think exists in foster care?
The fear.  I hear so often from people that they couldn’t foster because it would hurt too much if they left.  I thought this too and it’s true.  It does hurt, but not enough to not give a child a safe place to lie their head at night, food in their bellies, clean clothes on their backs and the opportunity to experience love and security.  We’re grown ups.  We can deal with the fear and hurt of them leaving but they shouldn’t have to.  I have had the opportunity to witness not just in my own life but in numerous others the absolute joy that comes with fostering.  Is it hard? Yes.  It’s the hardest thing we have ever done but it’s also the best.

What is something you are passionate about?
My little family.  When I look at my life now I think of the verse: “Perhaps this is the moment for which you have been created. Esther 4:14”  It’s why Micah and I waited for over 10 years for a little one.  It was all apart of God’s plan for our life.  Isaac is only going to be small once.  He’s growing so fast and I know there will come a day when he doesn’t need me as much.  So I’m enjoying being his number 1.  I love spending time with him and Micah.  Watching him grow, learn and become who God intends for him to be.  This season of my life is precious to me.

Life is so busy these days–how do you recharge?
Alone time.  I need just 30 min to myself and I’m good to go.  Thankfully I have a husband that recognizes this and keeps Isaac occupied (he’s a serious mama’s boy and I love it) for me to grab those few moments when I need them.
Tell us three things you are loving (books, tv shows, products, etc.).
  • Cross body purses…I have always preferred a tote-like bag but recently used a cross body on a trip and it’s a game changer especially with a little one and all the stuff. Two Words: Hands. Free.
  • Llama Llama–Children’s books written by Anna Dewdney. Isaac and I both love them! Llama Llama Red Pajama is Isaac’s favorite.
  • Plunder.  I became a consultant with Plunder in January because I love the jewelry and I had challenged myself to overcome my fears and get out of my comfort zone.  I love it.  It has been so much fun.  I have met some great women and feel more confident in myself as a person than I ever have before!

I love Ashley’s personal insight into the foster care system and her wisdom on how salvation is a promise, not a feeling.  Thank you so much, Ashley, for sharing your heart with us!

8 Things Making Me Happy Right Now

Happy Right Now

You guys, I’m not going to lie: It’s been a rough week.  And it’s only Wednesday.  I’ll save you from all my whining, but sometimes, we have to intentionally focus on the happy. Am I right? I’m right. So that’s what I’m doing today–sharing the things that are making me happy right now.

1. Natural products. I have been on a big chemical free kick. We are choosing mostly whole, natural foods and products for our home and it makes me weirdly happy.  I’m planning an entire post dedicated to the exact products I love, but you can check out Grove Collaborative to shop for your own natural products. (If you use my link, they’ll give you $10 off your first purchase!)

2. Sunshine.  This weather we are having lifts my spirits ridiculously.

3. This song.  It plays on repeat in the car and at home.  The girls and I know every single word.

Happy Right Now4. Our hardwood floors.  I’ll be even happier once we are moved into the new house, but for now, I get super excited when I walk out and see these beautiful, rustic hardwoods covering my floors.

5. The countdown to Spring Break.  We have next week off and have zero plans and I could not possibly be any more thrilled than I already am.

Happy Right Now6. This book by Erin Loechner.  You guys, I know I rave about books on here a lot.  Like, A LOT.  But this book has been so good for my soul lately.  It’s funny, it’s enlightening, it’s full of grace, it’s permission to rest.  It’s a reminder that we are not called to this frantic pace we so often keep.  It is everything I needed to hear in this season of my life.

7. Garden Planning.  Lara Casey has a cute little Gardening 101 series on her blog and it has me all sorts of anxious to start planting our summer veggies!  (She also has a new book coming out in June that I absolutely cannot wait to get my hands on!!)

Happy Right Now8. All things COLOR and the #abmlifeiscolorful on Instagram.  Search for it–if you are a color-lover like I am, it’ll make you happy too 🙂

That’s it, y’all.  Help a sister out and tell me one thing that is making you happy, right now.  Leave it in the comments!

Weekend Rewind + new Beauty and the Beast review

Happy Monday, ya’ll. Our spring break starts next week and we are counting down the days. It puts a little extra pep in my step knowing I get a vacation next week =)

We had a jam-packed, fun-filled weekend this weekend and I can think of no better way to start out a week than to recap it for all of you! (Plus, we saw the new Beauty and the Beast movie and there has been oh-so-much controversy over it, so I’m going to put my two cents in!)

Friday night: Shrimp boil at my parents house. Two naked butts in a bathtub. Burning the midnight oil cleaning in the new house so flooring could go in on Saturday!

Saturday: Lunch at Rosie’s with Kristi, Kelly, and Madi. Beauty and the Beast. Take-out Fulins at Nana and Papaw’s for Nana’s birthday celebration.

Sunday: Church flow (it tickles me saying that.)

And now, my Beauty and the Beast review!

We loved Beauty and the Beast.  It was very much like the original, only with actual people instead of animated characters.  When Belle’s father stumbles into the Beast’s castle, the wolves and the Beast himself are pretty intense.  It’s all dark and scary for about 2.5 minutes.  The whole “homosexuality issue” is just some media mogul making a mountain out of a molehill.  The movie was amazing, with a great moral, and I would recommend it to anyone!

What did you do this weekend?

Hello Bright Eyes: Dermal Filler | Elamar Skin Science

Dermal Filler

This blog post is part two of a series in partnership with Elamar Skin Science. All services and products were complementary but all opinions and experiences are my own.

Dermal FillerI have had dark circles under my eyes for as long as I can remember. I’ve tried everything–expensive creams, thick concealer, you name it. I chug water to make sure I’m not dehydrated because that only makes the darkness worse. Even when I don’t wear makeup, I feel the need to swipe concealer under my eyes–it’s that bad.

My friends at Elamar Skin Science convinced me to try dermal filler under my eyes. Spoiler alert: I LOVE it. Hello, bright eyes!

Dermal filler is a gel-like substance that can be inserted under your skin to plump up areas of your face.  It is a natural substance and is temporary, because it will eventually be absorbed by the body.

My Dermal Filler Experience:

The day of my appointment, I was super nervous.  I was afraid of the pain, and of coming out looking crazy-eyed.  The doctors at Elamar quickly informed me that it wouldn’t mess up, but if it did, there was a serum that could dissolve the gel.  Yay!

The technician came in first and applied a numbing cream to the area under my eyes.  After sitting for 20 minutes, Dr. Gill came in to begin the procedure.  I’m going to be completely honest and tell you that the first prick of the needle hurt.  Not super painful, but pretty uncomfortable.  The gel itself has a numbing agent in it, so after that initial prick, I didn’t feel a thing.  The entire process, including the 20 minutes with numbing cream, took about 40 minutes.

Following the procedure, Dr. Gill recommends that you sleep in a recliner or other semi-sitting position for two nights.  He prepared me for a small amount of bruising and/or swelling.  I didn’t experience any swelling and only had tiny bruises where the needles entered my skin.  (In the first reveal photo below, you can see the small bruises in my after photo!)

Dermal filler

I am amazed at my results.  My mom told me the other day, “You just look so refreshed!”  And that is exactly what I was going for.  =)

Dermal Filler 2

The cost for under-eye dermal filler at Elamar Skin ranges from $400-595 and lasts for one entire year.  There is a 2-year filler option for $795.

Any questions?  I’ll be glad to try and answer them–just leave them in the comments!

Currently, Vol. 3

Y’all, life goes by so quickly, doesn’t it?  I had great intentions of doing a monthly post full of what we’ve been doing, currently.  When I looked back, my last Currently post was in September and volume 2 was all the way back in April!  Oops!  Maybe that’s what happens when you are building a house and running three kids around everywhere?  Anyhoo, today you are getting the third installment of my Currently series.  Enjoy!

What We’ve Been Up To, Currently:

Currently

MARDI GRAS!!! At our school, our fourth grade hosts an annual Mardi Gras parade.  Each fourth grade class makes its’ own float and the rest of the school sits around the inside square of our school and watches the parade of floats and students and everyone gets tons of candy.  It is one of my favorite school traditions!Currently

Last week, we all got haircuts.  Both girls got major hair cuts– Kyndall had SIX inches taken off!  And this from the girl who literally cried a few months ago because she had to have it trimmed.  My how the tables have turned! 🙂Currently

We were super excited to have the Davis clan come and visit a few weekends ago.  (This is Justin’s sister and her husband and little boy.)  We love them so much and relish any chance we have to spend with them.  The kids had such a great time riding the four-wheeler, fishing, and just hanging out on the farm.  On Sunday, the whole West gang came over for lunch.  I hate that we didn’t get a picture of ALL the kids, but forgetting to take a picture is a sign of too much fun, right?Currently Currently

Spring is my absolute most favorite time to live on a farm.  Babies are being born, eggs are being laid in abundance, and things are starting to grow.  BUT it is still cool enough that the smells stay at bay.  (The heat of the summer months really brings out the animal smells!)Currently

This baby girl of mine had to go for a sleep study.  She was very nervous, but she settled in pretty quickly.  She looked very pitiful hooked up to all those wires and tubes, though.  She seemed to sleep pretty well through the night of the study–I was the one who woke up every time the nurse came in to adjust the wires.

I made a Facebook post about her sleep study and lots of you have been so kind as to ask what was going on with her.  She has had strep throat a million-gazillion times since October and her tonsils are staying massively swollen.  Her pediatrician ordered a sleep study as the first step in getting her tonsils taken out.  They think she has sleep apnea from her tonsils being so swollen that they touch together when she sleeps.

She has really felt rough the past few weeks.  She has this horrible, barking cough that comes from her throat being irritated from the swollen tonsils.  She is not eating well or sleeping well.  She has a headache, backache, and chest ache from the stupid coughing.  It’s a big mess.  We are on the road to having surgery to remove her tonsils, it is just a process to actually get there.  Please keep her (and us!) in your prayers for the next few months as we try to get her well!

Currently

When you haven’t been able to see your friends in a while, you FaceTime them for a conversation over dinner!  My Jase is absolutely in love with the Terry’s “Ju-Ju Lin” and wants to see her all the time! He is so funny!! I love this picture of the two of them (and sweet Case!) sharing their first of many conversations!

That’s what we have been up to, currently.  How about you?  I would love for you to share with me in the comments one thing you have going on!

That’s What She Said, Vol. 2

I am surrounded by the funniest people. I love a good sarcastic comment, or wrongly used word, or sometimes even a made-up word. That’s What She Said is a monthly round-up of all the things I’ve heard that have made me giggle.

That’s What She Said:  Libby

Libby met a new Chinese friend recently at a fundraiser for Zeke and Lisa’s adoption.  As they were going over the rules of a new game they were going to play, Libby looked sweetly and him and said “Do you understand what we are saying?”  Him, being Chinese born but raised in the USA, replied confusedly, “Yes, why?”. “She looked at him and said “Well because you are…..skinny!”  Good catch, Lib.

That’s What She Said:  Kyndall

“Mama, this tree is the greatest.  Just the greatest.  It holds our tire swing, it holds BOTH our hammocks.  I hope it never falls.”

That’s What She Said: School

On Inauguration Day, I had a student in the library who was in a big hurry.  She wanted to check out her books and get back to class before President Trump was sworn in.  She said, “I really don’t want to miss this.  I’ve never seen an inauguration before.  Because when President Obama was sworn in, I was dead!”  You know, since she wasn’t alive yet, she was dead.

That’s What (HE) Said:  Justin

The girls have been begging to go eat at Stevi B’s pizza for months now. (Sidenote:  If you’ve never had Stevi B’s, you should!)  One day, they were being extra whiny and complaining about how long it had been since we had eaten there.  Justin, very seriously, turns to them and says “Do you know how long it’s been since kids in Ethiopia had Stevi B’s?”  Parenting comment, WIN.

That’s What (HE) Said:  Jase

Kyndall has been “training” Jase for weeks now to say that she is awesome and everyone else is poop.  Sometimes, that backfires for her.
