2018 Year-In-Review

We kicked off January 2018 with Jase turning 3 and me turning 33.

In February, the girls in our family (plus Sherry) went to see Kelsea Ballerina and Walker Hayes in concert at the Alabama Theater.

March was highlighted by a family road trip to Texas (that deserves multiple blog posts of its own).

In April, we celebrated Easter.

May brought about Mother’s Day. Our school hosted Muffins with Moms and we hosted a Mother’s Day lunch at our house. Libby graduated from elementary school and began preparing to move to middle school.

June kicked off with a dance recital for Libby. We celebrated Father’s Day. We took a family trip to Navarre Beach and discovered a new favorite spot. We ended June with an early 12th birthday celebration for Kyndall.

In July, Libby celebrated turning 10 with a “glamping” party.

August brought the beginning of school for the girls and I. Libby moved over to the middle school and started 5th grade, while Kyndall returned to school after a brief virtual school hiatus and started 7th grade. Justin and I celebrated our 14th anniversary. Kyndall and I both started a new adventure with volleyball–her playing and me coaching.

In September, we attended an Alabama versus Auburn volleyball game in Tuscaloosa with Jess and Lily Kate to celebrate Lily Kate’s birthday. We also celebrated the wedding of two precious friends, Ryan and Emily.

October saw the beginning of middle school basketball for Kyndall. We packed Justin up and sent him to work disaster relief through AT&T in Florida for the remainder of 2018 (and some of 2019). The girls hosted their 3rd annual Halloween party at our house.

November brought a much needed visit from Justin (after him being gone for 5 whole weeks) and family Thanksgiving festivities.

In December, we celebrated Christmas (of course). We took our annual  family trip to North Carolina to go snow-skiing (which deserves a post of its own!). And Justin turned the big 4-0!

During the year of 2018, our highs definitely outweighed the lows. I have learned that the older I grow, the faster time flies. I have learned that it takes a village to raise a family and I have the absolute best village ever. I have learned to enjoy each moment and I can’t wait to see what 2019 has in store!

“Maybe Christmas, he thought, doesn’t come from a store. Maybe Christmas, perhaps, means a little bit more!” -the Grinch

This Christmas was extra special for our family. Justin worked disaster relief in Florida from October until Christmas, so we were super excited to be reunited with him for the holiday (and will be super sad to see him go back in January).

Christmas 2018

The Sunday before Christmas, we gathered with the West family and enjoyed dinner, gift exchanges, and lots of noise and laughter. We wore silly Christmas sweaters and Christmas light necklaces and enjoyed spending time together.

We attended the annual Frost Christmas Eve dinner, where we ate more food, played Bible games, exchanged gifts, and spent WAAY too long taking Christmas pictures (because we couldn’t stop laughing!)

Christmas morning was rainy and cold, but that didn’t stop us! The girls opened new Chromebooks, new iPhones, and concert tickets to see Kane Brown. Jase was thrilled about his new swingset, but when he was asked what Santa brought him he said “a bath bomb”. {face palm} We are all super excited about our family gift: a trip to California for Spring Break!

Christmas night is always wrapped up with gifts and Game Night at Pops and Gra-Gras house. This year was extra-hysterical with Hands, Landmine, and the Human Caterpillar. We laughed until our sides hurt, which seems to be a theme for all our Christmas celebrations this year.

Christmas 2018 was full of family and laughter, and there is no better way to celebrate!

Fall 2017: A Recap

Hey friends! It’s been a hot second since I last blogged and I apologize for that, but I think my brain and soul and body needed a rest from anything “extra” once we were moved into our new house. What better time to get back into the blogging groove than now?

Just a heads up–I’ll be doing a few “recap” posts to catch up on things I’ve missed sharing during my hiatus.  Let’s throw it back to Fall, 2017.

We ended summer with a birthday bang– Libby turned 9 at the end of July and Kyndall turned 11 at the beginning of August.  Both girls opted for birthday parties this year and invited a few of their closest friends to celebrate.

First day of 4th and 6th grades.  {Sidenote:  K started out 6th grade at school, but switched to the virtual option in September.  She is still enrolled at our school, she just takes her classes online, at home!}

Jase had dental surgery and because of his age, he was admitted to the hospital and put to sleep.  He was such a champ and did fantastic during the procedure.  {His mama was a nervous wreck.}

My grandfather (my dad’s dad) passed away.  It was a very tough time for our family and the grief still pops up at the most random times.

Libby and I went on a field trip with the rest of 4th grade to our state capital.  We had tons of fun and I so enjoyed getting to spend one-on-one time with my girl!

We took our annual pumpkin patch trip, this time to Lyon Family Farms.

Libby was voted into Student Council for the 2017-2018 school year.

The girls hosted their first Halloween party at our new house.  We had a haunted hayride, a bonfire, and tons of giggling girls!

We dressed up as mad scientists and handed out candy at our church’s Trunk-Or-Treat.

Kyndall’s team finished out their soccer season as the Morgan County 12U Champions.  This is most likely the last year these kids will play youth league soccer so we were all thrilled to end the season this way!

Justin and I had date night with some of our closest friends.  Our date nights happen way too rarely and we are determined to fix that.

Not pictured:

  • We hosted our first family Thanksgiving dinner at our new house, with a meal cooked completely by me.  It was wonderful and delicious and oh-so-fun.
  • We started working with the youth at our church and have fallen absolutely in love with these kids.  My favorite part of being with high schoolers is watching them love on and lead my own children.  I am so thankful that my kids have such great examples to look up to!

Stay tuned:  Winter 2017 Recap.

Life Lately: Family Update, April and May

family update

It’s been quite a while since I updated you on our family, here.  We’ve been more than a little consumed with house updates!  This family update comes via the camera roll on my phone, catching you up since my last family post (which was Easter, if you’re counting!).

family update

family updateOur elementary school hosted Donuts with Dads and Muffins With Moms, in celebration of those holidays.  (Since Kyndall is at the middle school now, she doesn’t get to participate in all this fun stuff!)

family updateLibby’s class went on a field trip to tour Vulcan Materials.  She learned all about rock quarries and how they operate and came home telling us all sorts of facts about minerals!

family updateKyndall had D.A.R.E program at her school and the fifth grade teachers decided to give out a few awards.  In addition to an award for her participation in the D.A.R.E. program, she also brought home an award for the top reading average!

family updateKyndall’s class took a field trip to Pine Ridge Day Camp and I got to tag along.  After, we went for lunch and enjoyed a little one-on-one time, which rarely happens!

Four-Wheelin’ on the farm 🙂

family update

My little farmer loves all things tractor-related, and he was super excited to get to help daddy drive this skid-steer.

family update

Libby had her last choir concert at the end of May and it was 50’s themed.  Doesn’t she look cute in those glasses and poodle skirt?

Now that you are caught-up through May, I promise to do better including my family in these blog posts.  I started this blog to share family posts and updates and I never want to lose sight of that 🙂

Easter 2017: A Short and Sweet Recap

Easter 2017

Today’s post is short and sweet:  an Easter 2017 recap in 300 words or less.  (It was supposed to go up yesterday, but due to, um, “user error”, it’s posting today!)

Easter 2017

Easter 2017 was celebrated without fancy “frocks”.  In support of Forget The Frock, we purchased shirts that helped support the Schumer family adoption.  This photo was taken with a fancy set-up of a barstool and some books, so please forgive the awkward angle 🙂

Easter 2017

My mom hosted Easter at her house this year and we had quite the crew!  We made the kids take a picture before they could hunt eggs, which is the only way this miracle even happened!

The girls were too quick for me to get pictures, but I was able to snap this one of Jase snatching up his eggs.  He shook each one he picked up to see if it rattled with money!! Easter 2017I love these people.  We have taken this picture for three years now and even though I am GENERATIONS older than all of them, they don’t make me feel like it!

Easter 2017

Our Easter celebration was followed up with fishing and kayaking on the pond.  Mal didn’t sign up to haul me around, but when I jumped in her kayak, there wasn’t much she could do about it! 🙂  Jase caught a fish as long as he is tall and the girls ended up swimming in the pond because they both suspiciously “fell” out of their kayaks.

All in all, it was a TERRIFIC Easter weekend!

A Second Birthday Celebration for Jase

second birthday

second birthdayLast Saturday, we celebrated Jase’s second birthday.  It was a simple celebration, held at Gra-Gra’s house since our house is currently under construction.  Rather than a huge event with all our friends and family, we opted for a small gathering with just Jase’s grandparents and great-grandparents.

second birthdayJayden was there, as well as Kyndall’s friend Reagan, who was going to church with us the next day.

second birthday

second birthdayJase was so stinking excited about his tractor cake. That’s all he asked for before his party, and he has been telling everyone about it since then!  He very obviously enjoyed eating his cake and ended up consuming two HUGE pieces.

Most of our family gifted Jase with money to put towards a swingset for the new house.  (Our old one was demolished in some recent storms!)  He did have a few gifts to open, and he tore into those with glee.  Among his gifts were a collectible John Deere tractor, some clothes, a pop-gun, and a toy machine gun.

After gifts, we all sat around and swapped stories about this funny little guy.  He has filled our lives with so much joy in the short time that he has been here.  His personality is so BIG and he keeps us laughing all the time.

Happy Second Birthday, Jase!

Today is my baby boy’s SECOND BIRTHDAY! I cannot even.  It seems like just this morning I was stuck on bed-rest, anxiously awaiting his arrival.  And today, he is TWO.

Stats:

Height: 32 1/2 inches

Weight: 22.2 pounds

This boy of ours is such a hoot.  He talks all the time and when we can’t understand what he is trying to tell us, he uses hand gestures to make us understand.  We love to make him say “more” in sign language and show us his own gesture for “cut”.

His trademark move is his lady-slaying wink.

second birthdayHe worships the ground his sisters walk on.  (And the feeling is mutual.)  He thinks he is just as big as they are.  If he gets something–a drink, a snack, candy–he thinks he needs two extra so that each of the girls can have one.

He is such a BOY.  He think poots are hilarious and will cackle if someone says the word “poop”.  He loves playing ball and driving his tractor and working with his Daddy and Pops.

He absolutely completes our family.

Happy second birthday, Jase Allen West!

Christmas 2016, A Holiday Recap

Christmas 2016

Christmas 2016I love Christmas. I love the traditions that we hold and how our normally chaotic lives slow down for a week surrounding the holiday. I love giving gifts and enjoying holiday meals with my family. It’s just the best time, you know?

Christmas 2016We celebrated with Justin’s family the first weekend in December. All the kids were given Christmas head-wear.

We celebrated with my dads parents the second weekend in December, but I failed to get any photos!

Christmas 2016A few days before Christmas I braved the kitchen with all three kids to make homemade Christmas cookies for Santa.

Christmas 2016On Christmas Eve, we spent the evening at Meme and Papa’s house.  After dinner, the kids all opened their gifts.  We took our annual Christmas photo.  Jase received his favorite gift of the year–a battery operated play chainsaw.  He “cut” Meme’s tree, all of our legs, the furniture in our house, and anything else he could think of.  The chainsaw had to travel with us for days.

Christmas 2016

Christmas 2016Christmas morning 2016 arrived with gorgeous, spring-like weather.  Perfect, since Santa brought bubble balls, Eno hammocks and a John Deere tractor.

Christmas evening is always celebrated at Pops and Gra-Gra’s house.  The kids were gifted a new trampoline (since their old one was ruined in the storm), a few other little toys, and lots of new underwear!

We played games (which Justin and I always dominate) and had the greatest time.  We fell, exhausted, into bed sometime around midnight.   Merry Christmas 2016!

Halloween 2016 Recap

HalloweenWe celebrated Halloween 2016 a little differently than usual. Our church hosted a Trunk or Treat on the Wednesday night before Halloween. Thank goodness for that, because Kyndall was sick on the actual day of Halloween.

The kids dressed up for our church’s Trunk or Treat as characters from The Descendents: Mal (Malificent’s daughter), Cruella Deville, and a dalmation puppy.

halloween-2016-bOn the actual Halloween day, Kyndall stayed home snuggling on the couch.  {After a trip to the doctor, we found out she had strep throat.  She had more of a trick than a treat this Halloween! Boo for that!} Lib and I took to school as Mal and a pirate.

halloween-2016-c

Libby was able to participate in all sorts of fun Halloween games, like this one where she was dressed as a mummy!

halloween-2016-e

halloween-2016-f

To wrap up our Halloween 2016, we carved pumpkins (I know! Better late than never, thought, right?). Libby and Justin visited my parents church for their Fall Festival while Kyndall, Jase, and I recovered from strep throat.

Lyon Family Farms Pumpkin Patch 2016

lyon-family-farms-pumpkin-patch-10Every fall, we make a visit to an area pumpkin patch.  We’ve visited every one within a two-hour drive from our home.  This year, we chose Lyon Family Farms in Taft, Tennessee.  We have been there once before and loved it, and this year was no exception.

On Friday afternoon, we checked the girls out early from school and surprised them with our annual pumpkin patch trip.  Our first stop was the petting zoo, complete with pig races.

lyon-family-farms-pumpkin-patch-11

That baby calf is just the cutest cow I’ve ever seen.  (And as a lover of all things cow, that’s saying a lot!)  The kids had the best time feeding the animals and the animals had the best time eating Libby!

From the petting zoo, we tried out all the attractions.  There was an awesome kid-sized zipline…

several massive slides that went super fast….

blow up slides that were soft and bouncy….

giant hamster wheels…..

and a corn crib.

lyon-farms-pumpkin-patch-14

We rounded out our pumpkin patch trip with a hayride to the actual pumpkin patch, where everyone chose a pumpkin to take home.

Selfies with a family of 5 are a struggle, for real.

If you are within driving distance of Taft, Tennessee, I definitely recommend Lyon Family Farms.  Their rates are cheaper through the week and the crowds are smaller, so if you can squeeze a Monday-Friday visit in, I’d recommend that, too!
