5 Practical Ways to Read More Books

I聽have been an avid reader since I was young.聽 I loved reading, even as a kid.聽 I have a library media degree, for goodness sake 馃檪聽 Even so, there have been cycles through the years of my reading tenacity–sometimes I read a lot, sometimes Netflix or TikTok captures my attention instead.聽

Reading is beneficial in so many ways.  Reading increases your intelligence, boosts your brainpower, and has even been shown to fight Alzheimer’s disease.  Reading fiction can improve your ability to relate to others.   Reading can lower stress levels and help you sleep better.

During the last 6 months of 2023, I made an intentional effort to read more.  Here’s what helped.

How to Read More Books:

1. Ditch bad books.  If I reach chapter 5 or 6 of a title, and I’m not totally invested, I abandon it with no remorse.  I have learned that if I try to MAKE myself finish a book, I’m going to drag around about it.  I’d rather ditch the bad one for something better.

2. Find YOUR genre.  Just because a book is popular doesn’t mean you are going to love it.  It’s a good place to start, but don’t compare your interests to those of other people.  I am a fiction GIRL.  Thrillers, romance, comedy–give me all of it.  I TRY to throw in a nonfiction book every now and then, but I almost always end up abandoning it.

3. Get a Kindle.聽 I love the聽idea of holding an actual, physical book in my hands when I read, but the convenience of a Kindle far outweighs that preference.聽 It is so much easier to stick a Kindle in my purse and carry it with me than a heavy book.聽 On a Kindle, books are delivered instantly instead of waiting days for shipping or having to drive to the store to get a new title.聽 And honestly, a Kindle is easier to hold than an actual, physical book.聽 I don’t have to worry about losing my page or holding the book open while I eat my popcorn =)

PRO TIP: Join Kindle Unlimited.聽 For 12.99 a month, you get unlimited access to thousands of titles.聽 That is the price of one purchased e-book, so the savings are immediate.聽 Also, join your local library and download the Libby app.聽 Digital library books delivered right to your Kindle device, for free.

4. Take your book with you everywhere.  You might be surprised to find out how many pages you can squeeze in while at the doctor’s office, in the car at pick-up, or any other ‘waiting’ place.  I read at the nail boutique, the hair salon, waiting for my grocery pickup–you name it.

5.聽 Track your reading.聽 I use GoodReads, but use what you like.聽 Make a list on a piece of paper if that is what works best for you.聽 It’s encouraging to see my books stack up and know how many titles I’ve completed.聽 I also love being able to backtrack and see what I’ve read in previous years, or how my current reading stacks up to years past.聽

How To Make The Most of Your Trip to Utah (in the Winter!)

For the past few years, my parents have gifted us with a vacation for Christmas instead of actual gifts. Ask any of us–this is the best thing they ever did and I am so thankful for it! We get to make priceless memories together and that is so much better than any gift could be.

This year, we traveled to Salt Lake City, Utah. There were 15 of us total, so actually getting there was quite the experience. Two flights and three rental cars later, we pulled up to one of the nicest houses I have ever stayed in. It had 8 bedrooms, 10 bathrooms, a game room, a theater room, and a hot tub. These amenities came in handy when 6 of the 15 of us got the stomach virus and had to stay at the house for 24 hours.

On the first morning, we drove to Park City to walk around and explore. It was such a cute little town, with lots of shopping and sights. Our reading family LOVED Dolly’s Bookstore on Main Street. We ate lunch at Annex Burger on Main Street and it was delicious. The Buffalo Sliders were chef’s kiss.

We began day two with a hike of Donut Falls. It was our least favorite part of the trip. The hike was easy, but longer than we expected. And the waterfall we were hoping to see was all frozen and snowed over, so we couldn’t see a thing. It would be BEAUTIFUL in the spring or summer, just not in the dead of winter when we were there.

Later that evening, we drove to Coalville, Utah, to do some snowmobiling. We booked through BackCountry Snowmobiling and they were wonderful! They provided everything we needed for the ride and were very friendly and informative on the tour.

After lots of research (and even a few visits to different ski resorts), we chose to spend our ski time at Brighton Resort. Brighton is located at the top of Big Cottonwood Canyon and is the cutest little village. We had a range of ski abilities in our group, and Brighton has slopes for all of us- from beginner to expert.

Kyndall has snowboarded for a few years now, so that was her first choice. Libby and Jase both started on skis but switched to boards after a few hours. They picked up boarding remarkably fast and fell in love with it instantly.

Way too quickly, it was time to board our flights back home. We said “See you later” to Utah, because we have every intention of going back soon!

Hello, 2024: Intentions for the New Year

I love the start of things. Beginnings are always so exciting and fresh. And the beginning of a new year? The MOST exciting and fresh. I have been making New Year’s resolutions/ intentions/ goals for as long as I can remember. (See my past years here and here.)

2024 Intentions:

  1. Make healthier choices. Choose nutrient-heavy foods instead of the junk I normally reach for. Drink at least 64 ounces of water each day. Eat to fuel my body– I have a bad habit of not eating enough good foods and feeling tired and yucky.
  2. Cook more meals at home. We waste SO MUCH money eating out. I enjoy cooking, for the most part, it’s just that after the first month (or week), I run out of things to make. I need help. I need suggestions. Please scroll to the comment section right now and leave me all your dinner ideas.
  3. Build our savings account. I want to be intentional about saving more money in 2024.
  4. OAL (Our Alabama Life). This blog. I love it. I love writing and sharing and choosing/editing photos and owning this little slice of the internet. Through the years, I have let it slide when things got busy. Not in 2024, though. This is our year =)
  5. Less TikTok and Netflix, more reading.

Do you make intentions/ resolutions/ goals for the new year? Do you stick with them? Share all your tips and suggestions (or even your own intentions!) in the comments.

The 6 Best Books I Read in 2023

The-6-best-books-I-read-in-2023

I read 32 books this year. This number is way less than in previous years, so I hope to be back on my “reading game” in 2024. Of those 32 books, I’m sharing the 6 best books I read in 2023. Of those 32 books that I read, 30 of them were on my Kindle Paperwhite and 2 were physical books.

{All links are Amazon affiliate links. I earn a small percentage of your purchase, at no additional cost to you. Thanks in advance for any purchases you make through these links!}

Things We Never Got Over by Lucy Score. Book one of the series, this is where I fell in love with the small town of Knockemout. It follows the grumpy-sunshine trope between bad-boy, loner Knox and high-maintenance, run-away bride Naomi. I fell in love with all the characters, especially Lucian and Sloane, whose story is told in book three.

Things We Left Behind by Lucy Score. This is book three of the series but is by far my favorite. It is the story of Lucian and Sloane. Sloane is an independent, bright-eyed, small-town librarian. I love her character so much. Lucian is grumpy and possessive– I enjoyed the flashbacks from their teenage years to the present.

Things We Hide From the Light by Lucy Score. Book two of the Knockemout series and the story of Nash (Knox’s younger brother) and Lina (Knox’s college ex).

None of This is True by Lisa Jewell. Two women, birthday twins, who lead very different lives. Whew! This book kept me guessing on every page. The ending was a total twist–my favorite kind!

The Last Caretaker by Jessica Strawser. This novel follows newly divorced Katie who moves cross-country to take a job as caretaker of a nature preserve. When a terrified woman arrives in the middle of the night, Katie realizes that the caretaker’s job is more than she signed up for. This was such a “feel-good” book for me. I love the courage Katie had and the lengths she would go to to protect those who couldn’t protect themselves.

Things You Save in A Fire by Katherine Center. Cassie is a female firefighter who uproots from her Texas hometown to move to Boston and care for her ailing mother. This book has so many layers that it kept my attention and I was able to finish it quickly.

All of the 32 books that I read were finished in the second half of the year. It was around that time that I signed up for a Kindle Unlimited subscription and I haven’t looked back yet. Kindle Unlimited gives access to thousands of books for only 12.00 per year. For avid readers, it is definitely worth it.

I keep track of all my reads on Goodreads.com— I’d love for you to follow me there! I’m also compiling my 2024 TBR list, so comment anything you think I need to read. For reference, I love thrillers and spice, but I hate anything sad.

Christmas 2023, Our Holiday Recap

Christmas 2023 was filled with the people I love, a few days of much-needed rest, and LOTS of laughter. We spent the week before Christmas in Utah (Thank you, Pops and GraGra). I can’t wait to blog all about that amazing Christmas gift.

We kicked off our Christmas celebrations on Christmas Eve. We attended the candlelight service at our church, which is easily one of my favorite Christmas traditions. Later that evening, my mom’s side of the family all went to my sister’s house to eat and swap presents (see photo evidence above).

On Christmas morning, we all woke up bright and early to see what Santa brought. We also enjoyed a big Southern breakfast–biscuits and chocolate gravy, bacon, eggs, and all the coffee.

On Christmas night, we all go to Pops and GraGra’s house to play Christmas games and it gets VERY competitive. We look forward to these games every year–GraGra gives out prizes, but the biggest prize of all is the bragging rights =)

Our Christmas celebrations aren’t quite over yet, either. We had to postpone the West family Christmas due to sickness, but I can’t wait to get together with them soon!

Puerto Rico Travel Guide

We recently returned from an amazing trip to Puerto Rico. I have visited a lot of places, and Puerto Rico is easily one of the most beautiful areas I have ever been.

Puerto Rico is a United States territory, so if you are a US citizen, there is no need for a passport. The cost of living in Puerto Rico is slightly lower than in the contiguous United States, so visiting Puerto Rico is surprisingly affordable.

Tips for Visiting Puerto Rico

Rent a car. We used our Capital One travel credit to rent through NU car rentals, which was a short shuttle ride from the airport. We had a great experience, but Enterprise and Avis rentals both have locations connected to the airport, which would be more convenient.

We rented this bright yellow Jeep Wrangler and rode around with the t-tops off. Island living at its best.

Take a stroll around Old San Juan. We were really looking forward to the gorgeous umbrella street we have seen in pictures, but they have taken the umbrellas down and the street is now covered with the flag of Puerto Rico. We still found lots of gorgeous photo locations, just not the umbrellas we were looking forward to.

Visit El Yunque Rainforest, the only tropical rainforest in the United States. We took a horseback riding tour from the Carabali Rainforest Adventure Park and I highly recommend their services. In addition to horseback riding through the rainforest, they also offer beach horseback rides, rainforest ATV/UTV rides, and hayrides.

Our guides, Edwin and Gaby, were wonderful. Edwin took special time with Jase and even raced him on horseback, which Jase thought was the best thing ever! Gaby got the girls’ phones and took photos and videos for us. Both guides were full of information about the rainforest and the river we stopped to swim in.

The views from the near-top of the rainforest were breath-taking. Pictures just don’t do justice to the absolute beauty that is Puerto Rico.

Side note: When we stopped to swim in the river, the Carabali Park had the cutest little hut set up to sell refreshments. We purchased chicken kabobs and fresh-in-the-coconut Pina Coladas. It was one of the best “meals” we had on our entire trip!

Go on a night kayak through the bioluminescent bay. We booked our excursion with Yokahu Kayak Trips and were very pleased. It was a little scary (okay, a LOT scary) going out into the ocean on kayaks in the dark, but it was one of my favorite parts of our trip. We kayaked for about 45 minutes through the pitch-back-dark mangrove trees before the bay opened up and we could see the water lighting up. I wish we had been able to get pictures, but you can google to find photoshopped versions that almost look like the real thing.

Soak up the sun (with lots of sun block!) at Seven Seas Beach. With crystal clear water, minimal waves, and lifeguards on duty, this was the most relaxing beach day I’ve had since my kids were born!

Puerto Rico travel, Seven Seas Beach, Farjado

Snorkel at Luquillo Beach and visit the Luquillo Beach Kiosks for lunch and shopping. The views at Luquillo Beach were even more amazing than Seven Seas, but the beach area was a bit less crowded and cleaner at Seven Seas.

We rented jet skis from a stand near the beach and watched the manatees play while we jumped waves. We ate lunch at the Luquillo Beach kiosks and shopped around for souvenirs at the many gift shops.

Where to Stay in Puerto Rico

In San Juan, we booked a one-night stay at the Condado Palm Inn. It was a basic hotel room with two queen beds and one bathroom. Very nice staff, super clean property. We weren’t there long enough to give a great review, but I did love the view from our window.

San Juan Puerto Rico Condado Beach travel

After our first night in San Juan, we drove an hour to Farjado, on the east coast of Puerto Rico. After hours of searching, I booked a room through VRBO.com at the Pena Mar Ocean Club. I will 100% reserve a condominium at the Pena Mar Ocean Club when we return. Not only was it very cost-efficient, but the room itself was super nice. It was minutes from Seven Seas Beach and walking distance from multiple restaurants. And again with the views. <insert heart eyes here>

Where to Eat in Puerto Rico

Cremaldi Ice Cream Shop is a must-visit. It’s the cutest little shop in downtown Farjado with the sweetest owner. She makes from-scratch waffle bowls in the shop. The indoor seating are swings hanging from hooks in the ceiling.

Picadillo Bistro and Cafe had the BEST breakfast. They offer lunch and dinner, too, but we only visited for breakfast. The pancakes and French toast were absolutely delicious, and the coffee was amazing.

El Cayo serves authentic Puerto Rican cuisine. We sampled the Surtido Cayo Mar, an appetizer assortment of seafood turnovers, alcapuerrias, and Kan Kan bites.

Coffee Therapy in Luquillo had the best coffee and pastries. We ordered bagels, French toast, and blueberry scones to go with our coffee orders.

Cinco Nudos specializes in Puerto Rican cuisine. Our favorite dish here was a traditional shrimp Alfredo, but we enjoyed tasting some of the authentic Puerto Rican fares.

Puerto Fino is a small patio restaurant next to a kayak rental outfitters shop, but the food was on point. Traditional seafood options with authentic Puerto Rican options, this was our favorite dinner location.

Holidays in August

**Post written in collaboration with Sierra Hansen and Basic Invite.

Being in quarantine has really got me down recently. To cheer myself up, I鈥檝e decided to start planning for the holidays. And when I say holidays, I mean all of them. I鈥檓 getting ready for everything from Halloween to New Years. We don鈥檛 know when this pandemic will end, so I鈥檝e decided to be ready to social distance for everything. Here are my plans for getting through the next six months six feet apart from everybody.

For Halloween, I鈥檓 not sure if I want to hand out candy or not. I don鈥檛 want to get sick, and I don鈥檛 want to get any kids sick either. If I do give out candy I鈥檒l make sure it鈥檚 all individually wrapped pieces, and instead of handing it out in person, I鈥檒l leave it out on my porch for trick-or-treaters to grab themselves. I will be dressing up my dog and I in matching Halloween costumes. We might not be able to go out in our matching outfits, but I can always post pictures online to show my friends and family.

For Thanksgiving, I鈥檓 going to celebrate with my family via video chat. I have a few family members that are in the at-risk category for contracting covid-19, and I don鈥檛 want to run the risk of getting them sick. Although we most likely won鈥檛 be all together for Thanksgiving, being able to connect with each other virtually will certainly be better than nothing.

My plans to celebrate Christmas this year is to throw a virtual party and send out Christmas cards. I love throwing a party every year, but with the pandemic may mean I鈥檒l have to change my plans somewhat. While a party over video chat may not be as fun as an in-person party, it will still be nice to see people and catch up with friends. For my friends that can鈥檛 attend my virtual party, I鈥檒l also be sending out holiday cards. I love using Basic Invite for my cards. All of their cards are customizable, from the font size and style to the color scheme. They have great holiday cards and photo Christmas cards. I think I鈥檒l put photos from Halloween of my dog and I dressed up on my cards this year. That will be adorable! Check out Basic Invite if you鈥檙e planning on doing holiday cards, you鈥檙e sure to find something you love.

I hope things get better for all of us in the next few months. And whether we are in lock down til New Years, or things open back up, I hope your holiday season is wonderful. Stay safe!

Spa Ideas to Try At Home

*Post written in collaboration with Mary Davis.A

A spa treatment at home may not be your top concern right now, but it is the perfect time to give your body some attention! Spas may not be opened everywhere due to the risk of exposure to the coronavirus but, as a busy mom, you need some time to pamper yourself. Below are at home spa treatments you can do at home.

Natural skincare for your daily routine

You can bring the spa life home by using natural products from the Blue Lagoon, yes that same resort in Iceland! The Blue lagoon products for healthy skin are made from bioactive compounds present in their geothermal seawater such as silica, minerals and algae. A little bit of these magic products can arrive at your doorstep directly from Iceland!

Seaweed body wrap

Seaweed, according to evidence presented by the US National Library of Medicine suggests that it contains anti-ageing benefits. Also, other studies conducted report that seaweed can detoxify the body. You can purchase seaweed for a body wrap from online or at local health stores and wrap yourself in green goodness!

To prepare:

Using pure, unflavored seaweed, soak it in bathtub water at room temperature. Drain the water, as you apply the soaked parts of the plant to parts of your body and finally relax in your bathtub for 15-20 minutes.

DIY massage oil

For a massage, you definitely need someone to do it to you, but you can prepare for DIY massage as a contribution to the activity (hello husband or wife). To ready the oil, get a container and add jojoba oil or any other lightweight oil of choice. Add a few drops of essential oil like lavender, vetiver or vanilla for balancing and calming effect. Avoid powerful essential oils unless you are sure of your ability to blend.

Pay a visit to Lush and get a bath bomb.

Think of a bath bomb in this way; soaking yourself in a fizzy, intoxicating scent and gorgeous colors. You can take your bathing routine to another level by using Lush bath Bomb products, take your time and try all of the different flavors!

How to prepare a bath bomb

Fill your tub with warm or cold water, then drop your bomb. To make the experience more magical, you can add essential oils, and for sensitive skin, add rose, oat milk and lavender for calming effects.

Deep conditioning hair treatment

You can have your hair shiny and lustrous with a natural at-home treatment! Mashing an avocado up and directly applying on the hair moisturizes it and at the same time nourishes. For protein treatments, apply beaten egg and wait for a minimum of ten minutes then clean with cold water.

After trying some of these at-home projects, you will enjoy the fulfillment of learning new skills and also saving a few pennies! Who knows, maybe after the pandemic you鈥檒l continue your spa treatments from the comfort of your home!

New Orleans, Louisiana

During #SpringBreak2018, the West’s headed West: Alabama to New Orleans to Texas and back. It was one of our favorite vacations of all time and one that will take a few blog posts to recap. Let’s start at the beginning, when we spent the day in New Orleans, Louisiana.

The drive from our home to New Orleans is almost exactly 6 hours. We woke up extra early (4 AM, early!) to make the trip so that we could have several hours to spend in New Orleans.  Our first stop when we got to the city was for beignets.  Of course 馃檪

Once our bellies were stuffed full, we took a walk around the city.  I fell instantly in love with the jazz players on every corner and all the vendors and the “history” of the city.

The girls stopped at several vendors for souvenirs. Libby picked up a beautiful painted piece of wood that commemorates the lives lost in Hurricane Katrina. The wood itself came from a home in the 9th ward of New Orleans that was destroyed by Hurricane Katrina.

Leaving New Orleans, we stopped at Don’s Seafood Inn for a late lunch/early supper. Don’s is authentic cajun seafood and is absolutely delicious!

Travel Journal New Orleans

Must-Do’s in New Orleans:

  1. Beignets at Cafe Du Monde.
  2. Walk around historical Jackson Square and enjoy all the magicians, street artist and entertainers, and other sights.
  3. Stroll down Bourbon Street (in the afternoon, of course) and check out the atmosphere.
  4. Ghost tour. We didn’t have time for a ghost tour on this trip, but we have definite plans to go back. The haunted history of New Orleans is so interesting!
